I usually write something like this every holiday season - to get people into the right mindset for the New Year. I got so much positive feedback from the most recent one that I decided to turn it into a 'New Life' fitness resolution checklist that people can use any time of year.

The principles are applicable for anyone looking to make permanent, positive changes in regards to their mind, body and spirit. To get the most out of this fitness checklist, print out several copies and post them in places where you will see them every day, such as your desk, refrigerator, bathroom vanity and your car. Don't forget to print a few for your friends and co-workers.

- Drop the New Year's Resolution and focus on a 'New Life Resolution' - think long term lifestyle adjustments, not short term fixes.

- Forget your past failed attempts at fitness and weight loss - focus on incorporating realistic changes into your life via sensible exercise and wise nutrition.

- Let everyone around you know about your personal 'mission' to reclaim your health and fitness. People will support you and sometimes join you when you voice your intentions.

- Let food serve to as fuel for life and optimum daily functioning - not as a coping mechanism for stress or emotional satisfaction.

- Know that true fitness is more a state of mind than it is a thing you do.

- Practice being more consciously proactive in your actions and reactions to the things that are going on around you. Don't let your subconscious make stupid decisions for you.

- Learn how to exercise regardless of your surroundings - there are countless people who achieve balanced fitness without going to the typical gym or health club. Learning how to exercise with little or no equipment allows you to stay on your program when you travel.

- Learn the true meaning of the word 'diet' - a way of eating that optimally supports life and NOT a way of depriving or starving yourself.

- Let your thoughts and actions be manifestations of your values, goals and true intentions.
