3. May I please have a copy of your company's creed? Will you tell me again
why it's good to have one and how to build one?
A creed pulls everyone together on the values that are important to the company.
It lets each team member know what's important to the team as a whole so each can
endeavor to live the values out loud and loudly. A simple way to build a creed is
to ask yourself what are the best and most common character traits and attitudes
in the producers of your company. Add in yours, as the leader, if they're not covered.
Now put them together in one to six sentences. Ours is as follows: I BELIEVE...with
God first, together with a positive attitude and serving others with a grateful
heart, determination, education, and adherence to a plan, I can be anything I want
to be!
4. My staff member was a General Manager, then a Fitness Manager, then a Personal
Trainer. These demotions occurred due to expectations not being met. Now she isn't
meeting them as a Personal Trainer. How do I approach this?
It's a common occurrence for team members not to know what's expected, even when
we think they do. Begin by asking her what expectations she should meet. Then educate
her on the difference between what you said and what she said. Ask her if she believes
she can do the tasks as you expect. Now, build the plan she's going to follow to
see that they get done. Make sure she's part of creating the plan (do it together)
and she agrees she can do it. Decide on the process you'll use to follow up on the
deadlines you've set together, then follow up. Praise for the littlest things and
reprimand also. The classic managerial guide One Minute Manager will help so much
with this!
These tips and others can help us seek to understand the people around us: employees,
employers, spouses, friends, children, whomever. Seeking to understand simply means
to get yourself out of the way so you can see where the person you're dealing with
is coming from. We never know what another person has gone through, is going through
or is feeling at the moment. Thus we shouldn't react to what we assume is going
on.
Remember...we are the only one on earth we can control... ever, only ourselves.
Our actions and reactions and responses are the only thing we can control, plus
they determine our future. Do you want to know what you're future is going to look
like? Just look at the attitude with which you choose to see the people in your
life.
